Research Experience
I completed a fellowship in bioethics research at Mayo Clinic after earning a master’s degree in bioethics from Case Western Reserve University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin. I joined the UAMS Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics in 2013. My education and experience give me unique insight into problems that arise at the intersection of law, medicine and ethics. My research interests are ethics education, health policy, and improving informed consent and assent through the use of comics. I have worked with several illustrators and health care designers to develop such comics, and plans to study their efficacy with children next. I am also an experienced clinical ethicist, an Institutional Review Board reviewer, and director of research ethics at UAMS and Arkansas Children’s. In that role, I handle calls to the institution’s research ethics consultation service and teaches most of the research ethics courses and lectures UAMS offers. Additionally, I have been one of the co-leaders of the Addiction Research Ethics Series for UAMS trainees in the UAMS Addiction Research Training Program.
